Grammar from this story
Verbzweitstellung (verb in position 2)
In a German main clause, the conjugated verb is always the second part of the sentence. The first part can be the subject, a time, a place, or an object. If something other than the subject comes first, the subject moves right after the verb.
position 1 (subject / time / place / object) + verb + (subject) + rest
From the story
- Am Dienstag ist er wieder nass.
- Heute nimmt er zwei Regenschirme: einen großen und einen kleinen.
- Im Büro lacht Sara.
Common mistake
Putting the subject before the verb when the sentence starts with a time phrase.
Heute ich gehe ins Kino.
Heute gehe ich ins Kino.
Negation: nicht vs. kein
Use kein for a noun that would have ein/eine or no article: Ich habe kein Auto. Use nicht for everything else: verbs, adjectives, names, and nouns with der/die/das. Kein has the same endings as ein (kein, keine, keinen).
kein + noun (instead of ein / no article) · nicht + verb, adjective, der/die/das + noun
