Leo lacht. Morgen sucht er zuerst im Kühlschrank.

Grammar from this story

Präsens (present tense)

The Präsens is used for things happening now, for habits, and often for the future too: Morgen arbeite ich. Take the infinitive, remove -en, and add the ending for the person. Some verbs change their vowel with du and er/sie/es: fahren → du fährst, lesen → er liest.

stem + -e / -st / -t / -en / -t / -en (ich / du / er·sie·es / wir / ihr / sie·Sie)

From the story

  • Leo sucht seinen Schlüssel.
  • Er nimmt seine Tasche und geht.
  • Morgen sucht er zuerst im Kühlschrank.

Common mistake

Forgetting the -st ending with du.

Du wohnt in Berlin.

Du wohnst in Berlin.

Negation: nicht vs. kein

Use kein for a noun that would have ein/eine or no article: Ich habe kein Auto. Use nicht for everything else: verbs, adjectives, names, and nouns with der/die/das. Kein has the same endings as ein (kein, keine, keinen).

kein + noun (instead of ein / no article) · nicht + verb, adjective, der/die/das + noun

From the story

  • Er ist auch nicht im Bad.
  • Leo hat keine Zeit mehr.
  • Aber da ist keine Milch.

Common mistake

Using nicht with a noun that has no article.

Ich habe nicht Zeit.

Ich habe keine Zeit.
