bezahlen, der Bahnhof, der Zug, drücken, die Fahrkarte, der Automat
Tap any word you don't know.
Fiona aus Dublin steht am Bahnhof in Bremen. Sie will nach Hamburg fahren. Sie braucht eine Fahrkarte. Aber der Automat spricht kein Englisch.
Fiona drückt viele Knöpfe. Sie steckt ihre Karte in den Automaten. Nichts passiert.
Grammar from this story
Modalverben (modal verbs)
Modal verbs say if you can, must, want, may, should, or would like to do something: können, müssen, wollen, dürfen, sollen, möchten. The modal verb is conjugated in position 2, and the main verb goes to the end as an infinitive. With ich and er/sie/es, modal verbs have no ending: ich kann, er muss.
modal verb (position 2) … infinitive (end)
From the story
- Sie will nach Hamburg fahren.
- Sie müssen bar bezahlen.
- Kann ich etwas für dich tun?
Common mistake
Conjugating the main verb too and not moving it to the end.
Ich kann spiele Gitarre.
Ich kann Gitarre spielen.
Negation: nicht vs. kein
Use kein for a noun that would have ein/eine or no article: Ich habe kein Auto. Use nicht for everything else: verbs, adjectives, names, and nouns with der/die/das. Kein has the same endings as ein (kein, keine, keinen).
kein + noun (instead of ein / no article) · nicht + verb, adjective, der/die/das + noun
From the story
