Tap any word you don't know.

Ich heiße Marko und wohne seit drei Jahren in Berlin. Meine Schwester Ana wohnt in Novi Sad. Im Mai besucht sie mich endlich. Sie bleibt eine Woche.

Ana liebt alles.

„Weißt du was?“, sagt sie. „Ich fahre nicht nach Hause. Ich bleibe hier.“

Heute sucht sie eine Wohnung. Natürlich in meiner Straße.

Grammar from this story

Präsens (present tense)

The Präsens is used for things happening now, for habits, and often for the future too: Morgen arbeite ich. Take the infinitive, remove -en, and add the ending for the person. Some verbs change their vowel with du and er/sie/es: fahren → du fährst, lesen → er liest.

stem + -e / -st / -t / -en / -t / -en (ich / du / er·sie·es / wir / ihr / sie·Sie)

From the story

  • Ich heiße Marko und wohne seit drei Jahren in Berlin.
  • Was machen wir morgen?
  • Ich fahre nicht nach Hause.

Common mistake

Forgetting the -st ending with du.

Du wohnt in Berlin.

Du wohnst in Berlin.

Verbzweitstellung (verb in position 2)

In a German main clause, the conjugated verb is always the second part of the sentence. The first part can be the subject, a time, a place, or an object. If something other than the subject comes first, the subject moves right after the verb.

position 1 (subject / time / place / object) + verb + (subject) + rest

From the story

  • Im Mai besucht sie mich endlich.
  • Im Park liegt sie stundenlang in der Sonne.
  • Heute sucht sie eine Wohnung.

Common mistake

Putting the subject before the verb when the sentence starts with a time phrase.

Heute ich gehe ins Kino.

Heute gehe ich ins Kino.
