Nora hat einen kleinen Balkon. Im April bekommt sie Samen von Herrn Kowalski. Er ist achtzig und wohnt unten. „Tomaten!“, sagt er. „Sie können sie auf dem Balkon pflanzen.“
Nora kauft einen Topf und Erde. Jeden Morgen gießt sie die Pflanzen. Im Juli sieht sie die ersten Tomaten, grün und klein. Nora ist stolz.
Aber eine Amsel hat auch Hunger. Jeden Tag frisst sie eine Tomate. Nora hängt eine alte CD an den Balkon. Die Amsel findet die CD schön. Nora kann nichts machen.
Im August hat Nora nur noch eine Tomate. Nora will sie nicht allein essen. Sie nimmt ein Messer und schneidet die Tomate in zwei Teile.
Dann klingelt sie bei Herrn Kowalski. Er holt Salz. „Eine sehr gute Ernte“, sagt er. Auf dem Balkon singt die Amsel.

Akkusativ (accusative case)
The Akkusativ marks the direct object: the person or thing the action is done to. Only masculine words change: der → den, ein → einen, kein → keinen. Feminine, neuter, and plural stay the same. Many verbs need it, like haben, sehen, kaufen, and brauchen.

Modalverben (modal verbs)
Modal verbs say if you can, must, want, may, should, or would like to do something: können, müssen, wollen, dürfen, sollen, möchten. The modal verb is conjugated in position 2, and the main verb goes to the end as an infinitive. With ich and er/sie/es, modal verbs have no ending: ich kann, er muss.
