Akkusativ (accusative case)

The Akkusativ marks the direct object: the person or thing the action is done to. Only masculine words change: der → den, ein → einen, kein → keinen. Feminine, neuter, and plural stay the same. Many verbs need it, like haben, sehen, kaufen, and brauchen.

Pattern

masculine: der → den, ein → einen · die / das / eine / ein stay the same

Common mistake

Not changing ein for a masculine direct object.

Ich brauche ein Regenschirm.

Ich brauche einen Regenschirm.

Quick check

  1. Ich kaufe ______ Apfel.

    ein · einen · einem

    Show answer

einen — Apfel is masculine and the direct object, so ein → einen.

  2. Siehst du ______ Frau dort?

    die · den · der

    Show answer

die — Frau is feminine; feminine does not change in the accusative: die.

  3. Wir besuchen heute ______ Onkel.

    unser · unserem · unseren

    Show answer

unseren — Onkel is masculine, so unser → unseren in the accusative.
